Fashioning Piety

Here, I write about the rise in popularity of Razanne, the veil-clad Barbie doll, who practically became an instant toy sensation overnight! For religious parents raising their children under Islam, she embodied the ideal counterpart to western Barbie. I explore her pious sartorial dressing (in public), versus those in private quarters, and what her consumerist lifestyle choices reveal about their owners' aspirations, and on a more deeper level, the religious, cultural, and social implications it has on young Muslim girls IRL. And recognizing it, by and large, as a historic moment telling the stories of those American/Muslim minority communities trying to exist in post-9/11 USA.
